LJ Idol Recs, Week 15

I feel sort of bad because several of my planned recs are on cacophonesque's list, this week, too. So, whatever, I'm just doing a longer list.

This week's topic was "Failure to Communicate."

But I will start with cacophonesque. She wrote about what it is like to be distracted into a world of intertextuality and attention deficit. You can read it here

I also very much liked alephz's post, where he wrote fiction based on Space Oddity and the story of Major Tom. Read that here.

comedychick made a video where she sings about the miscommunication that can take place when the slang for "rump" in one country is the same word as the slang for "vagina" in another. You can find that here.

Try fourzoas' personal narrative about the Paper Bag Test and how experience changes perception. It's here.

I recommend intrepia's story about the separation of distance and language and her love for her grandmother, which can be found here

java_fiend wrote a humorous anecdote about a terrifying teenaged encounter caused by a miscommunication. You can read that here.

mstrobel has been writing about the same characters since the competition began. This week, there is a communication breakdown between two characters that has a sweet and melancholy air to it. That's here

phoenixejc wrote a haunting story about a child who doesn't understand why her family can no longer see her. That's here.

rivermirage wrote an infuriatingly funny email exchange, which you can read here.

talon wrote a humorous tale of time travel with some characters that might be recognizable to some people reading this, although I don't want to say any more than that. Here is where that is.

tamaraland wrote about what happens when you ask for beavers in Ikea. That one is here.

theafaye wrote about the age-old tradition of one spouse tuning the other out. You can read it here.

thenodrin wrote a clever riff on famous movie quotes. That is here

whirled wrote a very sweet sestina on the failure of message transmission. Read it here

As for me, I wrote this Very Serious Essay on the Cinematic Work of Paul Newman, if you haven't seen it yet.

You can vote for me and for other folks in the poll below the cut! Voting is due at 1 pm EST today!

Thanks so much for the shout out!

Of course! I feel like sometimes posts about mundane things get overlooked in favor of the more serious or out-there subjects, even when they're well done, and you did a very good job with a very mundane subject!

Thanks for the mention again, Tea. I wasn't expecting another mention only a couple of weeks after the last time!

You're welcome! I was sort of mulling over a few people who I recced recently, but I figured since last week there were no recs, this week was fair game.

Thanks for the recommendation!

You're welcome! Yours was hilarious!

Aww, thank you for mentioning me! :D I'm also glad to see you mention phoenixejc's entry because I -just- read it and was blown away.

Yeah, I just loved it. It was haunting and sad and still managed to show the power of familial love.

And yours was great this week, too! I have been there, with the wondering what you've done wrong but hitting a wall when it comes to getting another person to explain.

Thanks lovely! I was glad that you liked my entry this week. And I'm really glad to see fourzoas getting more airtime, because what she did this week was wonderful, and I'm kinda bummed that she's not doing better in the polls.

Of course I liked it! I was in it and I am very vain.

And fourzoas is consistently one of my favorites. She writes really thoughtful posts and is really good at personalizing larger issues.
