Take a Penny, Leave a Penny!

Close to three years ago, karnythia hosted an LJ post where she asked people to leave a comment if they had something they wanted or needed, or if they had something they were willing to give or offer.

I got two things: yarn and friends.

This is how I met rosefox, who has since become one of the people in my life whom I value most.

So I've been thinking a lot lately about that and what a big impact it had on my life over the past three years. And it made me want to do it for other people.

Quoting karnythia's post from all those years ago:

What do you want?
What do you need?
What do you have?

Feel free to answer any or all of them. They do not need to be realistic things (I put world peace on mine last time) If you don't have a LiveJournal, or would prefer to answer anonymously, give us a way to contact you.

Feel free to share this on LJ, DW, and other social media if you like.

What do you want?
-People to have adventures with! Not just go out to bars or stay in watching movies (though obviously these things are fun to do as well). I want to try new stuff! With people!

-To learn how to sew/costume.

What do you need?
-A writing buddy. Someone to encourage me, and who I trust enough to show my WIPs and who will actually read my shit and (kindly but fairly) critique it.

What do you have?
-A number of dresses size 0-2 that are very lightly worn and need new homes.
-Some skirts/tops/jeans size 0-4, same thing as above. I'd be happy to take pictures/provide descriptions if anyone's interested. If I were to ship them, though, I'd need money for postage :/ Gotta save for wedding costs!
-A box of assorted books, most of them fantasy, that I have no space for.

I'm near Dallas, TX!

I could try helping you learn to sew from a distance... Not sure where you're at in your knowledge or what sort of help you need--but I'd be willing to field questions and offer pointers and maybe figure out more.

I also would be willing to read your WIP and give you feedback. I'm not working on any writing of my own right now, but I am trying to improve as far as reading/critiquing/editorial goes... so... if you're not scared to share with me (and you shouldn't be, because I'm a big fan and cheerleader of yours!)...

I am at basically zero knowledge, though my mom just gave me a sewing machine so I'd like to learn how to use it! I will now definitely be shooting questions your way... so get ready!

As for the second point - omg thank you. I'm working on a novel project, and while I wanted Chris to help me initially, he just will not critique me at all, which is not helpful. I'm not very far into it yet, but it would be great to get some fresh eyes on it.

I wear between a size 0-4, and am willing to pay shipping - descriptions, please?

Okay, here we go! I don't have the tops out yet, but will add them once I go through my closet again. I tried to find pics where I could, but can always take some if you want them.

  • Fox - Melee Skinny Jeans, Size 24/0 (Front View, Side view) Worn maybe 2-3 times.
  • Gap - Vintage Flare Jeans, Size 25/0 (Front View) Worn maybe 2x, for costumes. They are basically bell-bottoms.
  • Gap - Cropped Always Skinny Jeans, Size 24/00 (Front View, mine are a lighter rinse than this) Worn multiple times, but don't have any rips/tears/stains.
  • Banana Republic - Trouser Jeans, Size 26/2 (Front View) Worn once, if at all.
  • Delia's - Bailey Jeans, Size 3/4 (Front View) Worn multiple times, with some wear/tear at the bottom back of the legs from scuffing against the ground.

  • Express pink sweater dress, size XS. I can't find a picture of this one, but it's kind of a dark hot pink, with a square neckline, empire waist, and 3/4 sleeves. Right above the knee length. Worn 2-3 times.
  • Elle pale pink/black pleated dress, size 2. Again, couldn't find a picture. V-neck, black band around the waist and a black colorblock element at the shoulders. Knee length. Worn once.
  • French Connection UK Style sequin dress. Dark blue, like the pic, size 2. I never wore it, but I got it from Ebay. It was sold as never worn and the tags are still on, but some of the sequins look faded.
  • Iz Byer California red party dress. It looks just like the pic, only it's got a silver brooch in the middle of the bow. Size S, worn maybe twice.
  • A hot pink dress from Papaya that looks almost exactly like the red dress above, only without the brooch or the bandeau bottom. I've worn this one several times, and it has a couple of small pulls in the fabric, though nothing you could see unless you were way up close. Size S.
  • Kessley dress, bought for witch/dark fairy costume but never worn. Black with roses around the bodice, skirt is made up of "tatters" (strips of fabric) which are sheer. Skirt is lined. Empire waist with spaghetti straps, Above the knee. Size S.
  • Calvin Klein ruffled sweater dress, Size S. Never worn, still has tags.
  • American Eagle blue tiered dress, Size S-P. Worn 1-2 times.

Damn, too much comment for one text box!

  • Mossimo black pencil skirt in a satiny fabric (but polyester, lol), size 2. Pretty sure this one's from Target or Ross. Never worn.
  • Rampage high waisted pencil skirt in beige/metallic silver/pink plaid. Kinda retro looking, with an attached belt in the same fabric. Size 3. Worn a few times, with a couple of strings, but nothing that couldn't be trimmed off. (Kinda like this, but with a thicker fabric belt and in the other colors.)
  • Charlotte Russe mint/grey striped A-line skirt. Thick fabric. Size 5. Worn this skirt several times, but it's pretty nice quality and isn't really showing any wear.
  • Fossil grey wool skirt with buttoned pockets on the hips. Knee length. Size 4. Worn a few times, but again in great shape.

Whew! That's it for now. Let me know if you have any questions or would like me to take pics of some of the clothes that I couldn't find pictures of online. I'll also find all the tops, though that may have to wait until tomorrow as my fiance's about to go to bed and I'm sure he would not enjoy me rooting around in the closet!

That sequin dress looks awesome. How much would shipping for that be, like, $5? (Also I'm going to San Antonio Worldcon in August, so if you'll be there we could hand it off in person; I realize that's a long shot.)

Sorry to take so long to get back to you! I'm checking on shipping and will let you know ASAP - just wanted to check in and let you know I didn't forget.

...whoa - you weren't kidding about having a lot of stuff! And kudos on your taste; most of it sounds gorgeous!

tilivenn has already laid claims to the sequin dress, but other than that I'll happily take large swaths of this stuff off your hands! The Delia's jeans, the Elle dress, the Kessley dress, and all the skirts. PM me to let me know how much the shipping will run, and I'll send you my address!

And if there's anything you want... I feel kind of greedy, taking and not giving back. (And if you're ever in Boston and want an adventure buddy, I LOVE adventures...)

I also live in the Boston area and like adventures. I'll wear that dress, it looks like it's adventure-ready :P

Sorry to take so long to get back to you! I've been running around doing back-to-school stuff. I'm checking on the shipping and will message you as soon as I've got that figured out, but I wanted to let you know I didn't forget!

Don't feel bad at all, this is a huge favor to me! I need less stuff. And if I'm ever up in Boston, that sounds awesome!

I can do the writing buddy thing. I enjoy reading your stuff! I think I also have the critique skills to point out plot holes, et cetera.

Come to GA and we'll have adventures! :)
