Take a Penny, Leave a Penny!

Close to three years ago, karnythia hosted an LJ post where she asked people to leave a comment if they had something they wanted or needed, or if they had something they were willing to give or offer.

I got two things: yarn and friends.

This is how I met rosefox, who has since become one of the people in my life whom I value most.

So I've been thinking a lot lately about that and what a big impact it had on my life over the past three years. And it made me want to do it for other people.

Quoting karnythia's post from all those years ago:

What do you want?
What do you need?
What do you have?

Feel free to answer any or all of them. They do not need to be realistic things (I put world peace on mine last time) If you don't have a LiveJournal, or would prefer to answer anonymously, give us a way to contact you.

Feel free to share this on LJ, DW, and other social media if you like.

What do you want?
+ Yarn. I like to knit all the things.
+ Someone who could help me set up a website in the nearish future.
+ Interesting beads that I can use to make jewelry.
+ Fabric to sew into clothes and toys and whatever.

What do you need?
+Income: I can make lots of stuff--jewelry, knitted things, sewn things, jam, baked goods... I can also do editing. Not sure. I've been SAHM long enough that I've forgotten that I have skills not related to childrearing.

+A job for my SO: he has a B.S. in Biology. Is looking for entry-level work... he also has decent computer skills and a fairly strong chemistry background. We're willing to relocate. He's already been hunting for a while and is demoralized.

+Toddler clothing: pajamas, fall appropriate clothes, winter wear. Sizes 2T and up. We're trying to avoid licensed characters and obnoxious sayings. Toddler in question is a girl, but we don't really care too much about whether she's got "girl" or "boy" clothes.

+To conquer my anxiety. To find some direction in my life.

What do you have?
+Some random baby clothes in sizes 12 months and under. Mostly "girl" stuff.

+I know people in many places and I'm pretty good at networking--so I might be able to point you in the direction of good connections, friend or professional.

+I'm pretty good at research--especially genealogy and job postings. But I'm decent at searching out pretty much any information.

I would love to use the flannel and the satin. And I would check out the book. I don't know if it would help or not--but it's worth giving it a try.

Do you have my address?

I think you have my email, anyway. And if I can help you somehow in return, let me know. I feel like there's not much I can do for people these days, but I'm willing to offer of myself whatever I can.

I have a freakin' ton of yarn. Honestly more than I can deal with. Chris cleaned out his grandma's apartment when she moved into a senior community, and she gave me all her yarn. What kind do you want?

I'll use pretty much anything. Seriously, I even made Henrietta a beautiful dress just by using up small odds and ends... I just like knitting stuffs. I'd love to work with lighter weight yarns, even lace yarn. But bulky is good, too. And everything in between. I also love yarn that's more than one color.

And, if there's anything you'd like for me to make for you in return, let me know! I'm a pretty awesome knitter.

I'm just about at the "must take the outgrown kids clothes SOMEWHERE" stage again. I don't think i have anything smaller than 4T, though. Where are you located?

I'm in southern Maine. Right now don't get to go anywhere much, though once in a while we go down to the Natuck-Newton area.

Have you/M looked at http://www.higheredjobs.com/? Higher Ed is a pretty reliable place to work and is pretty much always hiring.

Not there specifically. I did spend a while visiting the websites of every university in the Northeast/Midatlantic region to comb for jobs. But I'll suggest to him to look there as well.

At this point we're wondering if we're just going to have to run a roadside jam stand for the rest of our lives, because the job market seems to be made of so much suck right now.

I can help with the yarn, beads, and website.

Aww. Thanks.

And if you ever are in want of someone to knit you something snazzy, you know where to find me. :)

I have a lot of fabric, beads, and various neat crafty stuff that I will need to unload soon in preparation for an overseas move. I would send them to you for shipping and (very reasonable) handling if you're interested. I would also love some more editing folks for writing, too!

Ooh! Can I trade you beads for genealogy help? I have the classic Jewish problem of "my ancestors all changed names and nationalities and got killed a lot" and I've been kind of stymied in my efforts to track people down.
